How many times in your adult life have you looked back and thought ‘if I had known, I wouldn't have done this or that’ and ‘I would have made a different decision’; ‘The beginning of wisdom is the fear of Yahweh. And the knowledge of the saints is intelligence’ (Pr 9:10). In science books you can find an outline of the world, in literature an outline of life, but in none can you learn about Charity.
The Catholic school is a part of the Church's assembly and in it it is possible to glimpse what Charity is, find it and unite with it. The principle of Catholic education centres on these three virtues: humility, meekness and charity, which our Divine Master teaches us and which are also the foundation of mutual collaboration. When the Lord sends us out into the world to teach, it is precisely to bring his love as his collaborators to all the people in the world. It was also God's love that made the Father send his Son for our salvation, and it is the love that proceeds from the Father and the Son that Jesus sends, the paraclete, the Holy Spirit to lead the Church; it is therefore impossible to establish a dialogue without God.
Charity is the bridge that allows the word to enter, the bridge to establish a dialogue and therefore the path to mutual collaboration between the entire educational community; in practice, as a teacher you need to know that the families you are working with are people who have a history, sins and imperfections, but who seek God and bring their children to love and seek him and understand that God loves them very much, putting up with their defects and imperfections with a sacrificial spirit, once this barrier has been crossed you will find in them the work of God and a source of virtues. A bond of trust can then be established where the family feels safe, welcomed and shares its life so that it can get to know its pupil and concretely realise this principle of getting to know the other in order to understand them, educate them and lead them through life in a solid bond of fraternity, the school as an arm of the Church accompanying them throughout their lives, the teacher being more than an education professional, ‘To offer young people a path of school formation that is not limited to the individualistic and instrumental enjoyment of a service only in view of the title that must be obtained in addition to the learning of knowledge, it is necessary for students to have an experience of strong sharing with educators’.
In order for society to receive what it needs today, we need strong and pure (chaste) young people full of hope that is directed towards God, because ‘hope is never just for me, it is always also hope for others: It does not isolate us, but makes us mutually supportive in goodness, it encourages us to educate each other towards truth and love." This process demands asceticism is not easy, not infrequently it will be painful, and only through the ways of sacrifice and offering of a generous heart that loves God and his divine will can the expected end be reached, the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls, ‘It is essential to recognise communion as a gift from God, as the fruit of the divine initiative carried out in the paschal mystery’ and as a gift it must be asked for incessantly.
Charity also leads us to zeal for the truth, making dialogue between teachers from the same institution or between teachers and researchers from other institutions a path of truth for the good of the whole human community. Teachers need to attend meetings, training sessions and congresses to enrich and share their professional experience, collaborating with everyone's development. The advent of the internet has made this sharing possible among professionals from other regions and countries, and there are no limits.
